Optical fibers are the backbone of the internet. The design of such waveguides requires extensive knowledge of light propagation properties. During my PhD thesis we developed a simulation tool that helps to understand optical fibers. These simulation capabilities led to the development of the most powerful ultrashort pulse laser systems in the world based on a new generation of very large mode area fibers.
The simulation tool is based on a Python Eigenmode solver in combination with extensive data analysis and calculation algorithms to identify the required mode properties.
